SPRING COPENHAGEN · J.I. Christoffersen
Danish craftsmanship on the dining table – the Salt Penguin as salt grinder and sculpture.
The Salt Penguin by Spring Copenhagen combines the precision of a professional grinding mechanism with the expressiveness of a handcrafted wooden sculpture. Made from FSC-certified walnut and maple, each piece carries the unmistakable signature of J.I. Christoffersen – a Danish designer trained as a carpenter who never separated function from form.
J.I. Christoffersen's background as a carpenter gave him a special understanding of wood and its properties. With the Salt Penguin, he translated this into a penguin silhouette that is instantly recognisable and yet entirely functional. The result is an object that works equally well on the dining table, sideboard, or windowsill.
The Crushgrind® (10 Axle) ceramic mechanism was developed and patented in Denmark – it grinds salt evenly and is built for longevity. Handmade and hand-assembled: slight variations in grain and tone are intentional, an expression of genuine craft production.
Body in FSC-certified walnut, complemented by FSC maple, silicone, and ceramic. The walnut gives the Salt Penguin its characterful dark tone; the maple adds lighter accents. Both woods are FSC-certified. Care: damp cloth and occasional beeswax.

Is the Salt Penguin suitable both as a table object and as a salt grinder?
Yes – the Salt Penguin was explicitly designed to fulfil both roles. The fully functional Crushgrind® ceramic mechanism ensures consistent grinding, while the walnut and maple penguin sculpture stands as a design object in its own right on the dining table or sideboard.
What materials is the Salt Penguin made from?
The Salt Penguin is made from FSC-certified walnut (primary material) and FSC-certified maple, complemented by silicone and a Crushgrind® (10 Axle) ceramic grinding mechanism. As it is handmade and hand-assembled, slight natural variations between individual pieces are part of its character.
Which interior styles suit the Salt Penguin?
The walnut-maple combination harmonises well with natural, craft-oriented interior styles – Scandi, Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, or a mix of organic materials. The dark walnut body with lighter maple accents works equally well on a dressed dining table or a sideboard.
Who designed the Salt Penguin?
The Salt Penguin was designed by J.I. Christoffersen, a Danish designer with a carpentry background. He created the first version in mid-2006. Today the Salt Penguin is produced by Spring Copenhagen in collaboration with the Christoffersen family.
How do I care for the Salt Penguin?
Wipe with a damp cloth – do not submerge in water or put it in the dishwasher. Spring Copenhagen recommends applying beeswax occasionally to protect the wood and preserve its natural grain.
What are the dimensions of the Salt Penguin?
The Salt Penguin is 17 cm tall, 8 cm wide and 8 cm deep, weighing 175 grams. Compact enough for any dining table, but with sufficient presence as a standalone design object.
