What makes the set more than a board plus a bag?
The board (32 × 23 cm) fits precisely inside the bag (43 × 32 cm). That is not accidental compatibility — it is the design principle: cut, slide in, store. All in one sequence, one object. Martin Schober designed the board and the bag together, not separately.
Why is the board reversible — what do the ridges contribute?
The ridged side catches crumbs and allows clean cutting right to the base of the loaf without the bread slipping. The smooth reverse works as a standard cutting board for cheese, charcuterie, or fruit. Two sides with distinct properties, one board. Ash is hard and fine-grained — kind to knife edges and hygienic.
Why linen for bread storage — what can linen do that other materials cannot?
Linen has a natural moisture regulation: it absorbs excess humidity and releases it in a controlled way. This prevents bread from drying out or developing mould — unlike plastic film, which traps humidity and creates the ideal conditions for spoilage. The bread can be frozen directly in the bag and thawed inside it.
How do you wash the linen bag — will it shrink?
The bag has already been pre-washed — it will not shrink further. Washing at 60°C is possible, for example when the bag picks up bread residue or crumbs. The organic cotton drawstring tolerates the same conditions. Air-dry after washing.
How do you care for an untreated ash wood bread board?
Do not put ash wood in the dishwasher and do not leave it wet for extended periods. Wash with warm water after use and dry immediately. Regular treatment with wood oil maintains the surface and deepens the grain. Ash is a hard, dense wood — a well-maintained board lasts for decades.
Who designed the set — and what are the Wendelstein Werkstätten?
Martin Schober designed the set for the side by side label. The Wendelstein Werkstätten are a non-profit workshop for people with disabilities in Bavaria. The side by side model connects product designers with workshops of this kind: design authorship meets handcraft production under social criteria.
