SIDE BY SIDE · KNIFE BLOCK TIMBER TWIN
The Timber Twin knife block by side by side is not one block but two: ash wood in its most direct form.
The design principle of the Timber Twin by Simon Bredt is as consistent as it appears: two flat sheets of solid ash wood, standing parallel, a precise gap between them. No filler material, no bristles, no inserts — just wood and geometry. The block sits with just 7.5 cm depth on the worktop and holds up to eight knives upright, blade-gentle and immediately at hand. The ash is sourced in Germany, untreated, and handcrafted at the Wendelstein Werkstätten in the Bavarian foothills — a workshop for people with disabilities and a long-standing partner of the side by side network.

What is the design concept — and who is Simon Bredt?
Simon Bredt is a product designer who developed the Timber Twin as a rigorously minimal solution: instead of a solid block, two flat wooden sheets — the gap takes over the holding function without any additional materials or mechanisms needed. The concept reduces the knife block to the absolutely necessary and makes that reduction the design statement: not minimalism as gesture, but reduction as problem-solving.
How does the gap hold the knives — and is it really stable?
The gap between the two ash sheets is 0.4 cm wide and runs continuously across the full width of 32.5 cm — the blades are held with a gentle friction, blade-protective and secure. The two blocks sit with a total weight of 3.6 kg solidly on the worktop. Knives up to 21.5 cm blade length find secure places, with tips protected inside the wood.
How much worktop space does the Timber Twin take up?
The Timber Twin is deliberately flat in construction: 7.5 cm depth, 32.5 cm width, 22 cm height. It requires significantly less depth than conventional knife blocks, which often need 15 cm or more. Against a kitchen wall or on a narrow shelf it fits without difficulty — and its flat profile takes up very little visual space.
Untreated ash from Germany — how does the material develop over time?
Untreated ash has no sealing, no lacquer, no oil: it is open and responds directly to the kitchen environment. Over time a natural patina develops — the wood becomes slightly darker and more lustrous where knife spines rest against it regularly. This is not wear; it is the material living. Occasional refreshing with wood oil is sufficient; the dishwasher is not suitable.
Which kitchen styles suit the Timber Twin?
The light ash and the clearly geometric form of the Timber Twin are compatible with modern, Scandinavian-influenced kitchens as well as classical or farmhouse styles. The object makes no strong stylistic statement — it fits in without disappearing and remains timeless across decades.
Where and how is the Timber Twin made — what is the story behind side by side?
The Timber Twin is made at the Wendelstein Werkstätten in the Bavarian foothills — a workshop for people with disabilities. The side by side label was initiated by product designer Sabine Meyer, who recognised the craftsmanship and precision of the Wendelstein Werkstätten as the foundation for a serious design label. Since then, several product designers — including Simon Bredt — have collaborated with the workshop. The result are objects where the social origin is invisible in the finish: precise, clean, lasting.
