SIDE BY SIDE · FRUIT BOWL OH LÀ LÀ
Three oiled oak boards connect via magnets into a bowl — the Oh Là Là by side by side, recipient of the Form Award 2015.
The construction principle is the product: three boards of oiled oak, each with inset magnets, fold into a bowl measuring 31 × 31 × 7.5 cm — flat, they are just 33 × 11.5 × 3 cm. Martin Gschwendtner developed Oh Là Là as his degree project; the Form Award followed in 2015. Produced at the Wendelstein Werkstätten and the Isar-Würm-Lech IWL Werkstätten in Bavaria — precise handcraft from people with disabilities, evident in the fit of the magnets.

What design principle makes Oh Là Là a design object rather than just a bowl?
Three oak boards with inset magnets — nothing more. The connection system comes from Gschwendtner’s degree project and is refreshingly direct: lay the boards together, let the magnets engage, the bowl stands. No tools, no screws, no adhesive. The idea lives in the material itself — oak provides structure and aesthetics simultaneously. The fact that the bowl remains puzzling without instructions is not a flaw; it is part of the concept.
What makes oiled oak a good material for a bowl — and how does it age?
Oak is one of Europe’s hardest and most durable hardwoods — dense, resilient, with a pronounced grain that records the hand of the workshop. Oiled rather than lacquered means the surface breathes, develops a patina over time, and can be refreshed with wood oil when needed. A bowl that becomes more characterful, not less, with the years.
Is an oiled oak bowl dishwasher-safe?
No — wood and dishwashers are not compatible. Oiled oak handles everyday moisture, fresh fruit, and occasional splashes without difficulty. Standing water should be wiped off. A damp cloth is all that is needed for daily cleaning; wood oil refreshes the surface as required.
Which surfaces and rooms show Oh Là Là to best effect?
As an open bowl, Oh Là Là occupies a footprint of 31 × 31 cm — comparable to a large dinner plate. It works equally well on dining tables, sideboards, and coffee tables. The natural oak grain integrates into both light and dark interiors; the geometric three-part form sets a clear, calm accent without competing for attention.
How precisely are the magnets set into the wood — is this genuinely handcrafted?
The magnets sit flush in the oak — visible only as a small circle in the surface, invisible once the boards are joined. This fitting is demanding craft work: each bore must be exact for the boards to engage cleanly. The Wendelstein Werkstätten and IWL Werkstätten produce Oh Là Là by hand — the precision of the magnetic connection is the proof.
Who is Martin Gschwendtner — and what is the side by side label?
Martin Gschwendtner designed Oh Là Là as his degree project — production-ready from the start. The side by side label connects product design with social workshop production: designers create objects that are manufactured in workshops for people with disabilities in Bavaria. The Wendelstein Werkstätten and IWL Werkstätten produce Oh Là Là — one of the label’s most recognised pieces.
