SIDE BY SIDE  ·  KEY HOUSE

A plain wood house with a strong magnet and a floating shadow gap: the Schlüsselhaus magnetic by side by side is a wall object that holds its ground.

The Schlüsselhaus magnetic is not a key board and not a tray: it is one object for one set of keys, house-shaped, with a magnet that holds up to 0.5 kg. The back carries a continuous rebate — it creates a shadow gap to the wall, and the little house appears to float in front of it. Material: untreated oak or walnut, no sealing, no coating. Designed by muoko design studio, handcrafted at the Inntal Werkstätten of the Stiftung Attl.

What is the design concept — and who is muoko design?

The Schlüsselhaus magnetic was designed by the studio muoko design. The concept is deliberately minimal: not a comprehensive solution, but the smallest possible one — one house for exactly one set of keys. The designer explains: “One set of keys at one house, always at hand, and whoever wants to can use the roof colour or the wood type to mark ownership clearly. Order at a click — that was the idea.” The house form is not decorative: it is the carrier of the assignment logic.

What creates the floating effect — and what does the rebate on the back do?

The back of the Key House has a continuous rebate that lifts the object slightly off the wall and creates a shadow gap around its perimeter. The result: the house appears to float in front of the wall rather than lie flat against it. A small constructional detail that distinguishes a mounted object from a wall object with presence of its own. You notice this quality only up close — but you understand it immediately.

What does “untreated wood” mean — how does the material age and how do I care for it?

Untreated wood has no oil, no lacquer, no sealing: it is open, breathes, and responds to humidity and touch directly. Over time it develops a natural patina: oak lightens slightly in light or takes on a silvery grey tone; walnut remains a deep brown and becomes more nuanced over the years. This is not deterioration — it is the material living. Care: occasional refreshing with natural wood oil; no lacquering or sealing required.

How strong is the magnet — and what does the keyring need?

The magnet holds reliably up to 0.5 kg. A ferromagnetic element on the keyring is required: an ordinary steel split ring, a metal eyelet, or a steel carabiner is sufficient. Aluminium carabiners and pure plastic parts will not hold. For anyone who wants to retrofit their keyring: a simple steel eyelet is all that is needed.

Multiple houses side by side — how does the system work for a household?

The Key House is designed to work alone and to work better as a group. One house per set of keys — colour or wood type makes assignment clear at a glance: oak light blue, oak red, walnut natur side by side at the hallway is not a jumble but a system. Each house is mounted individually with a single screw; the spacing is freely chosen.

Where and how are the Key Houses made?

The Key Houses are made at the Inntal Werkstätten of the Stiftung Attl — a workshop for people with disabilities in the Inn valley in Bavaria. The Stiftung Attl is one of the specialised partner workshops in the side by side network; production runs through several handcraft steps. The result is an object where the origin is invisible in the finish: the rebates sit tight, the edges are clean, the magnet is precisely inset.
