SIDE BY SIDE  ·  POT TRIVET L

Extendable to 80 cm – large enough for roasting dishes and four pots, flat enough for the kitchen drawer.

The pot trivet L by side by side Design is the format for anyone a standard trivet has never been enough for. Continuously adjustable from 8 to 80 cm, it offers space for large roasting dishes, long fish kettles, and up to four pots side by side – and folds back to 8 cm wide so it disappears into the drawer when not needed. The scissor-grid mechanism in oiled walnut is tool-free and “proven in daily use for many years”, even under heavy pots. “Simple and elegant enough to use on special occasions” – and compact enough for everyday storage. Design: Sabine Meyer. Handcrafted in the Wendelstein Werkstätten for people with disabilities.

How does the scissor-grid mechanism work — and how stable is it under heavy pots?

The L trivet consists of walnut slats connected in a scissor grid via screw joints. When extended, the slats splay evenly outward; the width adjusts continuously from 8 to 80 cm. There are no springs, no click-stops, no moving metal components – only wood and screws. Customers report that the design has “proven itself in daily use for many years”, including under heavy cast-iron casseroles. The screw joints are the load-bearing element: they distribute weight across the full length of the slats.

Which pots, dishes, and serving formats does the L trivet fit — and where does it come into its own?

The L trivet holds up to four pots side by side. At 80 cm, it fits large roasting dishes, long fish kettles, heavy cast-iron braisers, or a spread of several serving bowls for a dinner table. For special occasions, it works as a deliberate table element: oiled walnut on a set table is not a utilitarian solution – it reads as a considered choice. For smaller single vessels, the S (up to 30 cm) and M (up to 50 cm) are available.

Why oiled walnut — and what happens to the wood over the years?

Oiled walnut is not a sealed material. It breathes, responds to humidity, and develops a patina over time. In walnut, this means an increasing depth of colour: the warm brown-grey spectrum grows richer, the grain more visible. A trivet used daily looks better after five years than on the first day – not worn out, but lived in. To refresh: a thin application of natural wood oil, worked in with a soft cloth and wiped off after 15 minutes.

What does “handcrafted in the Wendelstein Werkstätten” mean?

The Wendelstein Werkstätten are part of the side by side network of specialised partner workshops for people with disabilities in Bavaria. Production is broken into many individual steps – not for rationalisation, but so that as many people as possible can take part in the manufacturing process. The result: objects whose origin is invisible in the finish. Only the quality shows.

Why have the old cork trivets finally had their day — and what does the L trivet do better?

Cork trivets are fixed in size – that is their problem. They fit one pot, not the casserole, not the large roasting dish, not two pots side by side. To cover all formats, you buy four different ones. The L trivet replaces all of them: from 8 to 80 cm, it fits everything a normal kitchen puts on the hob. Folded, it takes up less drawer space than a single cork mat. One customer puts it directly: “At last, the old cork trivets are retired.”

How do I care for an oiled walnut trivet?

For everyday use, wiping with a dry or lightly damp cloth is sufficient; aggressive cleaning agents and larger amounts of water should be avoided. If the surface looks dull or the trivet has had intensive use, a thin application of natural wood oil – worked in with a soft cloth and wiped off after 15 minutes – is all that is needed. Not dishwasher safe. The result is an object that improves with use – not one that degrades.
